Whale series shows mother and calf bond
By Paul Eccleston
Last Updated: 12:01am GMT 10/12/2007

An ocean leviathan gently shepherds its calf through the electric-blue waters of the Pacific.

Zoological society films Mongolian jerboa
In an almost human gesture the 40-tonne female humpback whale has its giant flipper protectively round its child.

The mother, Mara, and her calf, Kell, are the subject of a 70-minute film which movingly chronicles the incredible bond between the two.

Shot in high definition Ocean Voyagers produces stunningly intimate images of the two whales on an epic migratory journey from waters off Polynesia where the calf is born to Antarctica.

Additional footage was shot Hawaii, Alaska, Newfoundland, The Bay of Fundy and the Gulf of Maine.

Humbacks, thought to have cruised the earth's oceans for millions of years, tend to follow a regular migration route which takes them from a summer in temperate and polar waters to winters in tropical waters for mating and calving.

Normally gentle creatures an adult whale will consume more than a ton of krill, a shrimp-like crustacean, per day filtering its food through overlapping plates in its mouth.

Humpbacks are characterised by the mysterious singing of the males. The songs are complex and individual and can last for as long as 20 minutes. They are repeated for hours at a time and are thought to be part of mating behaviour.

Some of the images in the film - including the haunting sight of the female motionless and asleep on the ocean floor while her energetic calf capers around her - have never been filmed before.

Despite their size - females can be 50-feet long - humpbacks are mysterious creatures and little is known about their lifestyles and their daunting journey to their feeding grounds in the polar regions.

The film, narrated by Meryl Streep, begins when Kell is only a day old yet still weighs about a ton, and is pure white as he swims beside his mother.

It shows him feeding greedily off his mother's fat-rich milk which helps him grow quickly. He will be nursed for about a year before being weaned onto solid food.

Ocean Voyagers features the dangers mother and son face from shark attacks, entanglement in discarded fishing gear and from commercial whalers.

The film is released as the Japanese whaling fleet is in Antarctica controversially looking to kill more than 1,000 whales, including 50 of the endangered humpback which have been protected by international agreement since 1963.

The baby whale is shown learning essential survival techniques from his mother, including the amazing art of bubble fishing where humpback whales surround schools of fish with elaborate curtains of bubbles before swallowing them wholesale.

Shot entirely in High Definition on location, Ocean Voyagers, narrated by Meryl Streep is an evocative documentary film about motherhood and parenting, featuring a remarkable newborn humpback whale and his enormous 40 ton mother.

An ancient species and one of the largest animals ever to live on planet earth, humpback whales have been travelling ? and singing their mesmerising songs ? throughout the world’s oceans for millions of years.

Ocean Voyagers provides a startlingly intimate portrait of humpback life by telling the story of the relationship between a mother whale, Mara, and her baby, Kell, throughout the infant's first year and the 7,000 mile journey they will make during this time to the feeding grounds of Antarctica.

As he grows, viewers witness the dangers Kell will face from both animal predators and humans.

This remarkable film is a revelation in our understanding of one of nature’s most enigmatic animals.
