Indonesia 8.9-Magnitude Quake Unleashes Killer Waves (Update9)
Dec. 26 (Bloomberg) -- An 8.9-magnitude earthquake, the fifth strongest in a century, struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra, unleashing giant tidal waves that killed thousands of people in India, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.
The strongest earthquake in 40 years triggered nine aftershocks measuring between 5.8 and 7.3, most of them in waters between India and Thailand, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site. Tsunami waves struck coastal areas as far as 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) from the epicenter.
Sri Lanka reported at least 1,300 deaths and the Indian government said more than 1,000 people died, Agence France-Presse said. At least 150 people died in Indonesia and 18 people died and more than 1,100 were injured in Phuket and other southern beach resorts in Thailand, it said. Deaths also were reported in Indonesia and Malaysia.
``The entire coastal area of northern Jaffna to Colombo has been severely affected, and we have asked international help to evacuate people,'' M.A. Hasan, information spokesman for the Sri Lankan government, said in a telephone interview from the capital Colombo.
``My mother was in the sea when the giant wave came and she escaped with only minor bruises, thanks to help from other people,'' said Francois Goret, a French resident in the Thai resort city of Phuket. ''Water came at least 50 meters inland. Chairs on the beach were washed away.''
Death Toll Rises
The Indonesian earthquake, which struck at 7 a.m. local time, was centered offshore about 1,605 kilometers (1,000 miles) northwest of Jakarta at a depth of 10 kilometers, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The death toll in Indonesia from flattened buildings and flash floods has risen to 100, AFP reported. Phone lines and electricity were cut.
The quake created tsunami waves as high as 5 meters (17 feet) along the north coast of Aceh province in Indonesia, knocking out at least one bridge and demolishing some buildings, said the Geology and Meteorology Office in Jakarta.
``I'm afraid the number is going to increase,'' Budi Waluyo, an official at the National Earthquake Center said of the death toll in Indonesia. ``The number of dead is expected to increase significantly because there are many people who were swept away by floods and haven't been accounted for yet.''
The threat from tsunamis, or waves triggered by seismic activity, isn't over, officials said. ``We expect the big waves to lash Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu for the next two days,'' A.K. Shukla, head of the Indian Meteorological Department, said in a phone interview from New Delhi.
Oil Facilities
There were no immediate reports of damage to oil facilities in Indonesia, Southeast Asia's biggest oil producer. Exxon Mobil Corp., which operates gas fields in Aceh, has had no production disruptions, spokeswoman Deva Rachman said by phone.
``As long as you don't see any damage to the facilities, especially the oil and gas pipelines, I don't see the (economic) impact as being significant,'' said Song Seng Wun, regional economist with G.K. Goh Holdings Ltd. in Singapore.
The airport at the Maldives, a group of popular resort islands southwest of India, was closed today because of tidal waves and flooding, said airport official Khadheeja Ibrahim. Seven flights were stranded.
Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said he can't recall tidal waves of that magnitude hitting the nation's shores before. Phuket and other southern beach resorts are a favorite destination for foreign tourists during the end-of-year holiday season. Some beachgoers were swept out to sea by giant waves.
''Phuket was most affected, not just people bathing in the sea but people driving their cars,'' Thaksin told reporters. ''People have died, but we can't say how many yet.''
Houses Destroyed
The Sheraton Grande Laguna in Phuket moved all its guests to a safe area when big waves hit the hotel, staff there said. ``Every beach area got wiped out,'' Gary Halpin, 43, a New Zealander who runs a diving business in Phuket, a tourist resort area on Thailand's west coast. ``Bungalows were wiped out. Bigger buildings had windows broken.''
The Indonesian quake is the second in the world this year of magnitude 8 or greater. Last week a magnitude 8.1 temblor was recorded in the Southern Ocean between Australia and Antarctica by the U.S. Geological Survey.
Magnitude 8 earthquakes are capable of causing severe loss of life if centered near heavily populated areas. An 8.1 quake in Mexico City in 1985 killed about 9,500 people.
The worst earthquake since 1900 was a 9.5-magnitude temblor in Chile in 1960, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Web site, followed by two earthquakes in Alaska and one in Russia's Kamchatka region that ranked 9 or above.
Indonesia's 18,000 islands are prone to earthquakes because the nation sits along the Pacific ``ring of fire,'' a zone of active volcanoes and faults in tectonic plates.

The most powerful earthquake in 40 years triggered massive tidal waves that slammed into coastlines across Asia today, killing more than 2300 people in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India, Malaysia and Thailand.
Tourists, fishermen, hotels, homes and cars were swept away by walls of water unleashed by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake, centred off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, where at least 243 people were killed by floods and collapsing buildings, officials said.
But the scope of the disaster became apparent only after waves as high as six metres crashed into coastal areas throughout the Indian Ocean and Andaman Sea.
In Sri Lanka - some 1600 kilometres west of the epicentre - the Prime Minister's office said 1500 had been killed and one million affected by the tidal wave surge.
Indian officials said that as many as 1,000 had been killed along the southern coast. Another 61 were confirmed dead in Thailand, and 10 in Malaysia. Thousands of people were missing, many of them fishermen at sea, and rescue workers struggled against floodwaters to find and evacuate stranded victims.
The death toll climbed throughout the day and was expected to grow even higher as more bodies were discovered. Hundreds of bodies were found on various beaches along India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, and more were expected to be washed in by the sea, officials said.
"I was shocked to see innumerable fishing boats flying on the shoulder of the waves, going back and forth into the sea, as if made of paper," said P Ramanamurthy, 40, a resident of the neighbouring Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
"Many boats were upturned, but fishermen were still holding on to them," Ramanamurthy said. "They also were pushed into the sea. It was shocking."
The US Geological Survey's Web site recorded the magnitude 8.9 earthquake off the west coast of northern Sumatra, 1620 kilometres northwest of Jakarta. It was centred 40 kilometres below the seabed. Aftershocks struck in the magnitude 7 range.
The earthquake was the world's fifth most powerful since 1900 and the strongest since a 9.2 temblor slammed Alaska in 1964, US earthquake experts said.
The force of it shook unusually far afield, causing buildings to sway hundreds of kilometres away, from Singapore to the city of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, and in Bangladesh, hours after the region's Christian communities had finished Christmas celebrations.
Initial damage centred on Banda Aceh, capital of the Indonesian province of Aceh on northern Sumatra. Dozens of buildings were destroyed, but as elsewhere, much of the death toll appeared to come from onrushing floodwaters.
"I saw nine people killed by flooding, including four children," a witness who gave his name as Mustafa told el-Shinta radio station from Banda Aceh.
A spokesman for Indonesian state-owned Garuda Airlines said Banda Aceh's airport - located several kilometres from the sea - was flooded and planes were unable to land.
In Sri Lanka, the government called today's events a national disaster and appealed for emergency relief.
"It is a very tragic situation," said police spokesman Rienzie Perera, adding that some hospitals were unable to treat the injured.
Holidays turned to disaster in southern Thailand, which welcomes hundreds of thousands of tourists to its southern beaches during the Christmas season. At least 61 people died and many were missing, but it was unclear how many were foreigners.
The owner of two resorts on Phi Phi island - where the Hollywood blockbuster "The Beach", starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was filmed - said that 200 of his bungalows were swept out to sea, along with some of his employees and customers.
"I am afraid that there will be a high figure of foreigners missing in the sea, and also my staff," said Chan Marongtaechar, who was in the Thai capital of Bangkok at the time. He did not have exact figures of the dead, but estimated that 700 people could have been on the beach.
Chan said that his employees had told him by telephone that they were "very scared, they want to leave the island," but that the waters were too rough for boats.
In India, the navy was evacuating people in low-lying areas of Andhra Pradesh state, but casualties were lower than they could have been because some ports were closed for the weekend.
Among those killed in the state were 32 people - 15 of them children - who had gone into the sea for a Hindu religious bath.
"This is the impact of the earthquake in Indonesia this morning," said Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y Raja Shekhar Reddy. "There were tidal waves in the sea and the entire coastal belt from Vishakhapatnam to Nellore (districts) has been affected."
In Madras, the capital of Tamil Nadu state, 100 bodies were found washed ashore on beaches, said the city's fire services chief, S K Dogra. At least 150 bodies were recovered from Cuddalore, another town in the state, said regional police superintendent K. Panniselvan. Another 14 people died in Kerala state and 14 in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
High waves and floods inundated the Maldives, a string of 1,192 coral atolls off the southwestern coast of India, injuring one Italian tourist and forcing the airport to close, an official said. A British tourist man died from a heart attack minutes before waves hit.
In Malaysia, authorities closed some beaches to the public after 10 people drowned went missing near a beach off the northern city of Penang.
The victims were believed to be mainly tourists and included some foreigners, a police spokesman said. The victims' identities were not immediately known.
Officials received reports that some vessels capsized at sea, but there were no further details, said Low Kong Chiew, director of the state government's Seismological Division.
Sumatra is separated from the western coast of peninsular Malaysia by a narrow strait.
Thousands of residents of high-rise hotels and apartments in Penang were temporarily evacuated.

跟贴：到目前为止，死亡人数已经超过9000，相信还会一直增加，受伤，失踪更是不计其数，真是人间惨剧！一直关注电视的新闻，镜头中一遍遍出现熟悉的PATONG BEACH和马累的街道，目前已经是一片狼藉。。本来安宁和平的世界和刚欢度圣诞准备迎接新年的人们。。令人心酸。。真的很庆幸RICHARD和ALFA尚未启程，也希望在普吉的朋友都平安！

跟贴：早上起来第一件事情，是看更新的伤亡报道，灾难24小时后，初步统计的死亡人数上升到11350（20分钟之前），失踪人数在某些地区是死亡人数的数倍。
海啸甚至席卷印度洋另一头非洲东岸的索马里，当地已经有9个人的失踪报告。
伤亡报道还来自印尼，印度，孟加拉国，泰国，马来西亚，马尔代夫。

海啸形成的巨浪像一头猛兽迅速扑向泰国南部地区，泰国著名的旅游地普吉、攀牙和甲米府都未能幸免，其中又以普吉岛受灾情况最为严重。截止发稿时，海啸已经在泰国造成至少310人死亡，1900人受伤，死伤者中包括多名外国游客。
海啸过后，普吉岛上的临海街道一片狼藉。许多汽车、摩托车和零售亭被海水冲坏，散落在道路两边，有些折断的树木横卧在路旁。由于高达5至10米的巨浪还在不停地冲击岸边，当地的上万名居民和游客争相往高处跑去避难。
“我简直不敢相信自己的眼睛，3层楼高的海浪向我们扑了过来，”刚刚躲过一劫的瑞典游客卡尔松心有余悸地回忆说，“我看见海水很快冲进旅馆大堂，没过了我的胸部，我只能死死抱住旅馆的柱子才没有被海水卷走。”
根据当地官员公布的初步统计数字，仅普吉岛一地就有至少29人死亡，其中包括多名前来普吉岛度假的外国游客。
“我得到的报告说，至少5名外国游客在海中溺水身亡，”普吉府府尹武东萨说。
当地医院已经人满为患。一名不愿公开姓名的医院负责人说，当海啸袭来时，许多外国人正在岛上的海滩散步，由于躲避不及，许多人伤亡惨重，至少30名伤者伤势十分严重。

在董里府著名潜水胜地埃默拉尔德洞，海啸袭来时正好有近百名游客在那里潜水，其中包括70多名外国游客。由于一时间措手不及，多名游客顷刻间葬身海水之中，另有数十人在海上失踪。
由于现场一片混乱，目前泰国警方很难确认遇难者的国籍和身份。
可能发生第二次海啸
大批游客至今仍然被困在一些岛上，泰国政府已经派遣救援人员赶往那里展开营救行动，泰国海军也已出动航空母舰出海实施搜救。

跟贴：昨天一直没能与当地潜水店联系上，据说普吉的供电、通讯都受到一定影响。
今早终于和Scuba Cat潜水店的教练通了电话，他好像心情很沉重。据他讲：
“It's mass! Our shop（巴东街的Scuba Cat潜水店）was hit baddly! We are now trying to sort things out.”
但是，好像Scuba Cat在丝米兰的潜船都没大事儿，潜水员也都安全。报道中所说的潜水员出事的地点是PP岛。
